JOHN TYLER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ICE-TONGS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 22,991, dated February 15, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TYLER, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Instrument or Handling and Cutting or Breaking Ice; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side View of the instrument. Fig. 2, is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My invention consists in combining a pick or cutter or both of them with a pair of ice-tongs in the manner hereinafter described.
The drawing represents my instrument in its most complete form7 that is to say, with both pick and cutter; the pick a, being attached to the back of one leg A, of the tongs and the cutter Z9, attached to the back of the other leg A. The tongs are in other respects substantially of the usual form and construction. The pick is pointed substantially like a common icepick and the cutter i made with its edge of chisel or aX form. The whole may be made of malleable iron, each leg with its attached pick or cutter being cast in one piece, thus making a cheap and convenient instrument for family or other use.
For handling ice this instrument is used like a common pair of ice-tongs. In cutting or breaking, the handles are held both in one hand, with either pick or cutter downward, according to which it is desired to use.
I propose generally to make the instrument with both pick and cutter, as little would be saved in cost by omitting either, and by providing both the instrument would be made so much more convenient.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of a pick and cutter or either of them with a pair of ice-tongs by forming or attaching the same upon or to the back of either leg of the tongs, substantially as herein described, thus making an instrument of novel character.
