Description
UNITED VSTATES Z. XV. LEE AND E. D. LEE,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BLAKELEY, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part ol' Letters Patent No. 28.99B, dated July 3, 1860.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, Z. NV. LEE and E. D. LEE, of Blakeley, in the county of Early and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Bale Ties; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a top view of a bale of cotton bound with hoops which are fastened by our improved ties. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the tie detached from the hoop. Fig. 3 is a section of the same attached to a hoop, but not in action. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the tie in action. l
Similar letters of reference represent like parts in each of the several figures.
Our invention consists in a tie-plate constructed, applied, and operating as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the cotton-bale, B the hoop,- C the tie-plate, and D a transverse slot which extends in an obliqueldirection through the tie-plate. f r
To apply the tie-plate all that has to be done is to place the hoop round the bale, slip its ends through the slot E in opposite directions, so that one end laps over the other end. This being done while the cotton-bale is under the action of a compressing machine, sufficient space exists between the cotton and the hoop to apply a pair of pinehers to the inner end of the tie-plate and to draw said end round from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4. By thus drawing the oblique tie-plate round the direction of the slot is changed, and consequently the two ends of the hoop are so bentthat they present ashoulder, E, for the tie-plate to bear against when the cotton-bale is released from the act-ion ot' the compressing-machine and allowed to exert an outward pressure in all direct-ions upon the hoop and tie-plate.
My tie-plate is Very simple and yet very effective in its action, and from a practical test on a large scale we have found no greaterinconvenience in applying it than is experienced with many of the improved devices now in use.
Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tie-plate O D,constructed, applied, and operating as herein described, for the purpose set forth. p
The above specification of our improvement in cotton-bale ties signed by us this 2d day of June, 1860.
