Description

-parts UNITED STATES- OFFICE.
PATENT-- y YCHARLES c. BIER,ior NEW oIz'ILE'ANs, LOUISIANA.
IMuRovlao moNr-"IE FoRcof-r'roN-IBALES'.
Specification forrning pu'rtof Letters Patent 510.2858525, dated J une 2S, 1860.
To all whom it may cnncern Beit known that I, CHARLIJSQC. BIER, of New. Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and simple mode of making an iron tie or buckle, vfor the better security .in-fastenings -of cottonbalesand alloth'er'baled goods, and --for the .protection of thel s ame from damage by rust; ,and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the'saxne, reference bemg had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of the specification,- in which.-
. Figure 1 isa perspectiveview; Fig.. 2,/Yoop part of the tie or' buckle; Fig. 3, the band;
- Figa, illustrates the' manner of putting the tie or buckle together; Fig. 5, the triangular pin. Letters in all have the same reference to To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I Inake asquare rim, as at A, of any known metal of suicicnt thickness to stand Whatever strain may 'be put upon it by the nature of r goods baled. Then take a'band of irorror any;` g other metal of a sutficientbreadth and thick-- ness to overcome the strain intended to stand.
On one end of the band C, Irivet thepin D,'as
at B, Fig. 3. 4'Ihis,pin, Fig. 5, is xna'de triarr- 'gu1ar,(aud which -also Inayvbe 'made round.)
The band is half the Width of the buckle,
V,and the pin D is the width of the buckle, Fig.
2 I- then clean and tinorigalvanize lall 'the parts in' the usualor'any known-way of doing the same, for the better protection of cotton and other baled goods fromdamage `by rust.
Fig. 4 illustrates the manner of putting the tie together. When the bale is pressed to the size required,.the`bands C are put around in the-"usual'way Then slip the-buckle Alover the en'd`G. Then bringfthe'end B D under A through A, as Fig. 4. N ow bring the buckle A around to B, then slip theend C through Aover D, and' the tieisfnade, as at Fig'. l. The greater the strain on the bands the tighter the tie willbe, forV as the ends recede from cach other the end B is brought jup to A, therebywedging the end C tight, and so pre- -Vent its slipping.
What I claim as invention, 'and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent, is
The particular novel mode ot' making -an iron'tie for thepurpse of `securely fastening Vcotton bales or other baled goods, as herein.
described, using for the manufacture of the same any metal suitable for that purpose.
d y 'CHARLES C. BIER.' In presence of- JAs. GRAHAM, HUGH MADDEN.
