Description

miran srarns PATENT orrion.
GEORGE WV. PENNISTON, OF NORTH VERON, INDIANA.
MACHINE FOR TIGHTENING AND SECURING METALLIC BANDS FOR COTTON-BALES, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,360, dated August 31, 1858i.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. PnNNis- TON, of North Vernon, Jennings county, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Tightening and Securing Metallic and other Hoops for Cotton- Bales, Hay-Bailes, etc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the Same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, marked Figure 1, and making part of this specification, and also Fig. 2, the latter being a friction-key- The object of my invention is to produce a machine which will with the greatest ease and facility tighten and secure metallic and other hoops, for cotton bales, hay bales, etc.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my lever A, Fig. 1, of iron or other material of any convenient length-on the flat side of which are two center pins, connecting arms `B B, at E F, or other suitable distance. The blocks C C, are strongly secured to the arms B B. The doors D D,
. are hinged to blocks c c-the beveled edges of the dbors fitting the edges of the blocks. I operate my machine by inserting the loose hoop encircling the bale near each end of the hoop between the edges of the doors and the blocks, shutting the doors by the fingers or with a slight knock of a hammer. The ends of the hoop being inserted, the arms and blocks, atthe greatest distance apart, and the lever lying parallel with the line of the hoop, I tighten, by taking hold of the lever, and moving it around in a line parallel with the hoop, drawing the ends and blocks together. This operation may be repeated, if necessary, until the hoop is drawn sufficiently tight. The hoop being tightened and the ends lapped between the blocks and held by the machine., as will be the case when the end of the lever is turned clear around to the opposite side of the bale, the ends of the hoop are secured by inserting the keys G G, as in Fig. 2.
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The construction of my hoo-p tightener and holder Fig. 1 in combination with doors D D, and arms B B, and lever A-con structed as described, or any other construction substantially t-he same, and which will produce the same results.
August 14, 1858.
GEORGE W. PENNISTON.
