Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASA O. BROAD, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BAND-FASTENINGS FOR BALES, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letti-rs Patent No. 17,485,1atcd June 9, 11357.
`view of the saine.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar device for uniting the two ends of a metallic hoop or band for securing bales, packages, Src., and so that it may be readily disconnected without cutting the hoop or band. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de-A scribe it in connection with the drawings.
A represents a piece ot' ordinary hoop-iron, bent into the forni of the bale or package it is intended to secure; and Brepresents aslide with an opening through its center; and c, a pin made dat on one side to lie close to the slide, and rounded on the opposite side, so as not to present any sharp edges to the hoop. This pin may be of wood or metal either.
To forni the three above-enumerated things into a hoop or band and secure it to the bale or package, it is necessary t-o have a pair of clamps, nippers, or tongs, with which the ends of the strip of iron that is to forni the hoop are seized, and the bow or curve a formed on each end thereof'. These bows or curves a a are laid one over the other, and the slide placed over the lock, so that said bows or curves shall extend up through the opening in the slide. The pin C is then driifcnthrough underneath the bows, and its ends rest on the slide B. Enough of the end of the strip that forms the hoop is left beyond the bows or curves, so that as the slide is driven down by inserting the pin it will press upon these ends, and by friction prevent them from being drawn through the slide.
The advantage ol' this form of lock for securing the ends of the hoop is this, that when the bales are opened for rebaling the hoop need not be cut, as all the others which lock over each other or over the slide or buckle have to, and to loosen my band it is only necessary to drive out the pin C, and it immediately separates. It can therefore be reused without shortening it every time it is used. It can also be put together easier and tighter than any others of which I have knowledge. This hoop or band can also be shortened without cutting-viz., by drawing it up to the proper place, and making another bend in it, and allowing` the remainder of the end to be loose, or tied fast to be out of the way; or several bends may be made in it at or near where it is to be united, so that it may be taken up or let out at pleasure to the proper bow or bend that will best unite it to the bow underneath.
I-Iaving thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic hoop or band whose ends are united by the bows or curves a a, slide B, and pin C, as herein set forth and described.
