' IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALB HOPS.
Specification forming part ofy Letters Patent No. 22,823, dated February 1, 1859.
, on Cotton and other Bales; and I hereby de- Clare thatthe following is a full and exactldescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the `peculiar manner of constructing the iron tie or friction-key, and in its ready 'adjustment to the ends of the piece of hoop made use of in baling cotton or other materials, and also in the ready manner of detaohing it from the bale, the same letters referring to the same parts in the different gures, in Which- Figure l is an iron band shown edgewise; Fig. 2, a section of the lap, showing the slots cut through the ends of the-band, in which the tie or friction-key is inserted. A, Fig. 4, shows the positionoi the tie While the bale is in the press; Fig. 3, its position as the bale is loosed from the press. The ends of the slots B B come in contact with the sides of the tie, and the draft causes the tie to turn. At the same timethe convex inner sides or shoulders 'ing a friction lwhich serves to relieve a part ot' the strain on the tie, and the convex bearing prevents cutting the hoop, thereby effecting twe very important points-to Wit, strengthening the lap ,and V*relieving the strain on the tie. Fig. 4 represents the tie as being introduced while the bale is in thepress, or at the time of detaching the same, as in eithercase,
y with a common Wrench or pair of pinchers, the
tie, by giving it a quarter-turn, is set in itsv proper position for fastening or releasing the same from the bale Without injury to the hoop, so that it may be used any given number ot' times, atpleasure.'
The great advantages of this construction l are that it takes less material and less eXpansion than any other hoop, and is much more readily applied to the bale.-
' Having thus fully described my invention, Y
specied.
