Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOSEPH BRAGG DUNN, OF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA.
||v|PRovED ooTToN-BALE Tua.l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 74,059, dated February4, 1868.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPE BRAGG DUNN,
` of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top View of my improved balei tie as attached to a hoop. Fig. 2 represents a slightly-modified form of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved bale-tie, simple in construction, which will hold the hoop securely, which may be easily applied, and which can be manufactured at small expense and without waste of` material; and it consists in the bale-tie constructed in the form and manner hereinafter more fully described.
A is the bale-tie, which is rectangular in form, and is made of a strip of thin bar, plate, or cast iron. In one end of the tie is cut a slot, B, for the reception of one end of the hoop O. In the other end of the tie is cut a slit leading in from one of the side edges of said tie, said slit being cut in such a way as to form a shoulder, al, upon the outer edge of said slit at its open end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The body of the tie upon the inner side of the slit is struck or bent downward, so as to form a curved lip, a2, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. If desired, the lip a2 may be cut off or shortened, as shown in Fig. 4, or, in other words, a slot may be formed in the other end of the tie A similar to the slot B, but
'inner side of the said slot is then struck or bent down, as before described. In applying the tie, one end, c1, of the hoop C is passed through the slot B, and is then bent down to form a loop, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The other end, c2, of the hoop G is then passed into the slit in the other end of the tie, drawn tight, and passed under the looped end of said hoop, the end of the tie in which is the looped end of the hoop being at the sameraised up to facilitate the operation; then, as the pressure is removed frointhe bale, the tendency of the bale to expand causes the lip a2 to bite upon the hoop in the manner shown in Fig. 3, holding the bale iirmly and securely bound.
The tie A is very convenient for compressing or rebaling bales, for, from the construction of the tie, as soon as the compression of the bale has slackened the hoops the end c2 of the hoop may be slipped out of the open slot or slit, the slack of the hoop taken up, and the said hoop drawn tight and again inserted in the tie, in the manner hereinafter described,
the whole operation being very easily and quickly performed. Y
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved bale-tie A, formed with a slot, B, at one end, and a lateral slit or open slot at the other end, said open slit .or slot having a shoulder, c, at its outer end, and having its inner side struck or bent downward, forming a curved lip, a2, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. The above specication of my invention signed by me this 6th day of December, 1867.
