IMPROVEMENT IN SPICE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,631, dated March 9, 1875; application filed December 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. WHEELER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spice-Box, of which the following is a specifioation:
Figure 1 is a side view of one of my improved spice-boxes, part of the cover being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the detachable plate being removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the detachable plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Myinvention has for its object to furnish an improved spice or dredging box, which shall be so constructed that the spice may be sent to market in it, which will enable the spice to be sprinkled from it by simply detachin g a small plate, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
My invention is an improvement in the class of spice or dredge boxes having a perforated sliding or rotating plate applied to a perforated cover.
The improvement consists in providing the perforated cover of a spice or dredge box with a plate which is imperforate, and has a peculiarly-shaped slot that adapts it for reception and engagement with a headed pin on the cover, whereby said plate will retain its position while the box is not required for use, but may be instantly detached, all as hereinafter described.
A represents the body, and B the cover, of the box, which are made in the ordinary way, and the said cover B is perforated so that the box can be used as a sprinkling or dredging box, as well as a package. 0 is a plate, of such a shape as to fit snugly upon the top or cover B, and of such a size as to cover all the perforations of said top or cover. The plate 0 may be a plain circle, or its edge may be scalloped or otherwise made ornamental. In the plate 0 is formed a short slot, 0, extending from the center toward the edge of said plate. The outer end of the slot 0' is enlarged so that it may be passed over the head of the pin 12 attached to the center of the cover B.
By this construction, when the enlarged end of the slot 0 has been passed over the head of the pin b, and the plate 0 has been slipped into a central position upon the cover B the perforations of said cover will be entirely covered. The pin 1) may be made with a cross-head instead of a round head, so that the plate 0 will have to be turned a quarter revolution after it has been slipped to one side before it can be detached from said cover B, but I prefer the construction first described, as having a neater appearance.
I do not claim the application of a sealingplate to a dredge-box, for such sealing-plate is not new, attached by a pivot to the dredgebox, or sliding in suitable ways, or even entirely detachable and held by friction simply, or by some adhesive substance; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the perforated cover B of the spice or dredge box A, having the headed pin 0, of the plate 0, made imperforate, and provided with the key-shaped slot 0, as shown and described.
GEORGE B. WVHEELER.
