Description
E. F. BECK.
HARNESS-PAD.
NQ 175,408 Patented March 28,1876.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LIYHUGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. Ilv C.
AUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
ERNEST F. BECK, OF.. NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,110.8, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 10, 1876.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST F. BECK, of the city of Newark, in the county ot' Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Harness- Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot', which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication. A
This invention relates to that class ot' harness-pads known in the market and to the trade as handmade pads; and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereot', bymeans of which the mountings-such as the terrets, Sto-may be removed, and others substituted therefor at pleasure, without having to rip any ofthe seams, or in any manner lnarring or det'acin g the beauty or appearance ot' said pads.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the nature and characterofmyinvention,in which Figure l is an end view of a harness-pad partially in section; and. Figs. 2 and detail views, the latter also being in section, and
showing thatl portion ot' a pad with which my improvements are more particularly connected.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the several figures.
In harness-pads of this description it will be understood that the pad-plate ais confined in the upperA part thereof, being surrounded with leather, which is stitched thereon, and is removable from the under part or socket B by simply unscrewing the terrets and screws. Said under part or socket is made ot' leather, and stuffed in the usual manner, and is providedwith a recess, b, upon each side to receive the nuts c, in'which the terrets are screwed, suitable' stays or supports d, of thin sheet metal or other appropriate material, being riveted or otherwise secured upon the under side ot' said socket beneath said recesses. Said nuts are confined in said recesses by means otl a cap plate or cover, c, ofsheet metal, having a hole,f,.in the center, to admitthe shank of the terret, and a slot, g, in each end, where it is secured to the socket by means ot' suitable fastenings 7L, which, in the present case, consists ofthe rivets i, which secure the stays d beneath `the recesses b, said rivets having elongated swivel-heads, which project through said slots, and are susceptible of being turned by the. fingers, so as to button and unbutton, thereby confining or unloosing said cap, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-
The harness-saddle pad, provided with a recess for the terret-nut, and supported by au under plate riveted to the pad, and a detachable cap-plate provided with slots inits ends for the reception ot' the swiveled fastening devices, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A ERNEST F. BECK. Witnesses:
OLIVER DRAKE, J. C. TURNBRIDGE.
