HARNESS PAD.

UNITED STATES PATENr Erice;
J CHN FREDERIC HESSEL,GF GHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
HARNEssPAD.
SPECIFIQATIN forming part vof Letters Patent No. 286,435, dated October 9, 1883.
' Application led January .10, 1883. (No model.)
' paign and .State of lllinois, have invented certain nenr and usefulflmprovements in a Harness-Pad; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referene'e marked thereon, which form a part of this specication, in Which- Figure `L is a vertical section taken through my improved harnesspad in a direction with respect to its length. Fig. 2 is a' top vieuT of the harnesspad. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe saddle-plate and hook detachedfrom the pad. Fig. 4: is a bottom View of one of the side padplates. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the girth-rings and its plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate eorrespending parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to novel improvements on harnesspads. or saddles57 and the nature of my invention will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed draivings. Y
A designates the upper leather portion oi the saddle, and B B the padded portion.
C C are the metal plates or fra-mes of the saddle; D l),I the leather covering'thereof; E E, the terrets Whichl pass through the frames C C and leather portion A, and which have secured to their inner ends nuts that are inelosed in the padded portions. Y
F F are girth-loops, which are secured to plates G G, fastened tothe outer ends of the frames C C; and J is a saddle-plate, Whichis connected flexibly tothe inner ends of the said frames. This saddle-plate J is a rigid casting. The crupper-strap L'loopa is east on the back edge of the plate J and a lip, b, is.
cast on ,its front edge. To the bottom of the plate J a spring-plate, K, is secured by the shank of the check-rein hoek L anda nut, which spring-plateextends beyond the sides of the plate J, and is perforated to receive through it screws c c, that are used to secure the upper ends of the frames C C to the .por-
tion A. The plate J is perforated atd d d dk to receive studs @which are cast on the under sides and near theirmer ends of the frames G C.
The saddle-plate J is by the above means A secured liexibly to the pad or saddle, and affords a solid base for the attachment of the hookL to the saddle, and allows the use of any Adesired style of hook.
-It Will be observed that the inner ends of the frames (l C cover the sides of the plate J and forni avery neat nish` At the same 6o time flexibility is `allowed. at the joints of the parts. l
The girth-loops F are pivote-d to the plates y G, and these plates are secured'to the frames (ln by means of screws g, and also by means of studs h, cast on the frames Cf. Thus it will be seen that should the screii's g Work loose and become detached from the harness-pad the studs h will prevent the loops and their plates from slipping out of their places. i
It will be seen from the above description that I have a exible pad made partly of leather and partly of metal, the metal part being composed of sections so united as to admit of the required flexibility of the pad 7 5 and its consequent adaptability to the back of a horse.
I have shown the studs e on the upper ends of the plates or frames C perpendicular to the'planes thereof; but, if desired, these studs 8o may be inclined either toward the center ofthe pad'or from the center. I may also forni shoulders on the ends of the studs e and rivet the plates C loosely to the central plate p -Having described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a harnesspad, of the plate J, the spring-plate K, and the hook L,'seeured together and attached to the 9o frames C C, and leather portion A, all substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, in a harness-pad, of the east-metal frame C, the studs e, screivfastenings o, and the plate J, all constructed andl adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in ico presence of two Witnesses.
Y JOHN FREDERIC nEssEL. nlViimesses:
