Description

ROBERT BpD/xv'rs*l lmprovementn Boxes,
No.125,028. Puemedmawznsvz Uit-Tran STATES PATENT @Errea ROBERT B. DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.125,028, dated March Q6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. DAVIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the heads.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of heads provided with shoulders which bear on the ends of the body of a box, in combination with the covering extending over the edges of the body and of the heads in such a manner that when said covering is secured, by means of paste or other cement, the heads are iirmly retained in position, being prevented from being driven in by their shoulders, and from being forced out by the covering, and thereby a box of superior strength and durability is produced at little (if any) advance in the cost. The upper head in the boxes is perforated with a number of holes, which are closed by the outside covering of the box in f such a manner that if the contents of the box are in a powdered or granulated state, and if it is desired to get out some of the contents of the box, this purpose can be effected without removing either of the heads simply by punching through the outside covering opposite the perforations in the upper head.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my box, which may be made of pasteboard, wood, or any other suitable material, in the form of a cylinder, with a circular, oval, square, or any other desirable crosssection. The ends of this cylindrical body are closed by heads B B', which are provided with projecting rims or shoulders a, bearin g on the edges of the body A, as shown in Fig. l ofthe drawing, so that said heads are prevented' `vided with perfor-ations b, which are close-d on the outside by the covering C when the. same is turned down. If the box is lled with pepper Vor other spice, or material in a powdered or granulated state, such material can be readily discharged from the box without removing the head B, simply punching through the outside covering opposite the holes b, and if these holes are opened my box is converted into a cruet. The heads B B are made of wood, pasteboard, or any other suitable material.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture the improved box, composed ofthe heads B B having shoulders or rims a a., in combination with the body A and a protecting wrapper, O,`all constructed as herein shown, and for the purpose set forth. v
ROBT. B. DAVIS.
