LIFTING HANDLE FOR OOPPINS, &o.
No. 104,899 Patented June 28, 1870.

titrated sale THOMAS M. TAYLOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE MERIDEN BRITANNIA COMPANY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Lotte rs Patent No. 104,899, dated June 28, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS M. TAYLOR, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a newlmpi'ovement in Lifting- Handles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in- Fignre1,-a front view of the socket a1 lever;
Figure 2, a central section of the socket;
Figure 3, a central section of the socket and lever together; v
Figure 4, a front view of the socket, with the covering-plate removed;
Figure 5, a front view of the lever; and in Figure 6, the covering-plate detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in liftinghandles, such as are commonly used for and known to the trade as cofiin-handles, butadapted to other purposes, the object of the invention being the construction of the handles so as to relieve the screws from the purchase or leverage which is brought upon them by the common construction of the lovers; to this end,
My invention consists intlie construction of a plate in which are formed bearings for the trunnions ot' the lever, anda trunnion plate to set over the lever and form a stop or bearing, against which thelever is raised.
A is a plate, of any desirable form or configuration, here represented as a circular plate, in fig. 4, through 1d a single which a slot, B, is formed, and two bearings, a a, seenin figs. 2 -and 4, formed to receive the trunnions d of a lever, O, as seen in figs. 3 and 5. v
I) is a second plate, as seen in fig. 6, and may also be of any desirable form or configuration, and has formed therein aslot, E, so as to pass on over the handle, as seen in figs. 1, 2, and 3, so as to form a covering for the trunnions to secure them in place, and the upper edge of the slot E, to form a bearing,
against which the lever O presses, when raised, as
denoted in broken lines, fig. 3. By preference the two plates are secured by the same screws passing through the screw-holes d.
The levers may be used singly, or two or more may be applied and connected together in any desirable manner.
It will be observed that by forming bearings for the trunnions in the plate B, and a bearing against which the lever rises, directly above, by the application of the plate D in raising the handle or lever the tendency to draw the lower screws out is avoided, the strain being so nearly vertical that it comes almost, if not entirely, transversely on the screws, and the construction is capable of very great' variety of design and ornamentatioln I claim as my invention The plate A, having trunnion seats a a formed therein, combined with the lever O and covering-plate D, the latter serving to hold the lever and trunnions, and at the same time affording a bearing against which the lever presses in lifting, substantially as described.
