Description

UNITED STATES PATEANTNOFFICE.
WASHINGTON VAN GAASBEEK, OF WILLIAMS BRIDGE, NEV YORK.
IMPROVED SASH-STOPPER AND LOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,565, dated October 4, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON VAN GAASBEEK, of W'illiams7 Bridge, in the county ot' Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sash Stopper and Lock 5 and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a sash and its frame, showing the application of my stopper and lock. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section ot' the same, taken right through the stopper. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stopper and lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several tgures.
This sash-stopper and lock consists of a small lever so constructed with a recess for the reception of the edge of thesash that when so arranged in oneside of the frame in which the sash slides as to work in planes at right angles to the plane of the sash, it
may by its own weigh t, aided by the weight of the sash, and without the use of a spring, be caused to bite upon both the inner and outer faces of the sash, and hold it up in any position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the sash, and B is the frame in which it works, a groove, h, being provided in each side ofthe said frame for the reception of the sash. y
O is the stopper, which also serves as a lock, consisting of a lever of cast or malleable iron of the rst-class, having one arm much heavier than the other. This lever is attached by its fulcrumpin a to a plate, D, which is set ush into one side of the frame B on the inner side of the sash, and secured to the said frame by two screws, e e, and a recess/", is out in the frame for the reception of the said lever'. lThe longer and heavier arm ot' the lever projects beyond the front or outer edge of the plate D, and such projecting portion is made with a recess, b c, in its face, wide enough for the sash to pass through it easily and so arranged that the sash does pass through it. The inner and lighter arm of the lever is made with a knob or lateral projection, d, which protrudes through a slot, g, in the plate D on the inner side of the sash. The greater weight of the outer arm of the lever O, as compared with that of the inner one, when the said lever is left free, causes the said arm to drop in such a manner that the lower edge of the outer face, c, of the recess b c, and the upper edge of the inner face, b, thereof will hug the sash, the one edge hugging against the outer and the other against the inner face thereof, and when the sash is raised the weight or' the sash, tending to depress the lever, causes the said edges to hug it still closer and bite into it, and thereby prevent its descent. rlhe lever, however, is free to be lifted by the friction of the sash and thereby freed from the sash when ,the latter is-raised. To premit the sash to`be let down the knob or projection d on the inner end of the lever requires to be pressed down by the thumb or linger, which operation frees the edges of the recess b c from the sash and allows it to slide freely in the frame.
rihisv stopper, it will be understood, operates without the aid of a spring, and is therefore of very simple and cheap construction. It may, with the plate D, be made of castiron.
To make the stopper act as a lock-to lock the sash when down or closed-it must be arranged at such height that the sash, in closing, will pass out of the recess b c and that when the sash is down the outer end of the lever O bears upon its upper edge at such an angle as to resist any upward pressure applied to the sash.
Vhat l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stopper and lock, consisting of a lever, C, so constructed with a recess, b c, for the reception of the edge of the sash, that it may, when applied to work at right angles to the plane of the sash, hug or bite against or into the inner or outer surfaces ot' the sash, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
W. VAN GAASBEEK.
