GEORGE R; VANDERBIL'I, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEWl YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, JIJ.
LINDSTROM, AND D. W. STIDOLPH, OF THE SAME PLAGE.
Lettera Patent No. 72.128, dated December 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SASH STOPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. VANDERBILT, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester, and-State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Stops and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to theraccompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, and in which p Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window-sash and frame, showing my invention as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Figure 3 is a view of the device detached from the sash and window-frame.
Similar letters o f reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This inventionoonsists in two clamping-plates and a tightening-bolt, so combined and operated as to rmly locli the two sashes of a window in any desired position, thereby preventing the said sashes from being raised or lowered from the outside of the window.
The invention further consists in the arrangement of`springs with reference to the aforesaid plates in such manner that when the latter are released from the action of the tightening-screw, they will be pressed against the sashes with sncient force to hold the same in position. when raised or'lowered, as the case may be, without rigidly locking thesame as when the plates are tightened upon them by the screw, as just hereinbefore mentioned.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. I
A and B represent respectively the-upper and lower sashes of the window, and C shows the frame thereof.
Formed in the, inner surfaces of the front and back of one side of the window-frame, and next to the outer sides of the adjacent edge portions of the two sashes, are two recesses, a b, in which-are'placed two plates, c d, which rest against the sides `just mentioned of thc sashes. D indicutes a bolt, fitted into the window-frame, and passing through the plates c d, the inner end portion of the bolt being formed with a Vscrew-thread and screwed into a` female screw provided in the plate c, while an annular flanch, a', formed upon the bolt rests against the other plate cl, as shown is figs. 1 and 2. The aforesaid bolt is furthermore furnished at its outermost extremity with` a head or knob, b', by means of which it may be turned when desired, asherenafter presently set forth. Placed o within each of the recesses a b, at the outer sides of the clamping-plate situated therein, is a spring, e. When the bolt D is turned so as not to act upon the, clamping-plates, these springs press the said plates against the adjacent surfaces ofthe sashes with such force that theirl friction thereon-will retain the said sashes'in position .p when raised or lowered, as the case may be, to a greater or less extent, thereby enabling the said plates to serve all the purposes of ordinary sash-stops, at the same time that in case it is desired to rigidly hold or lock the sashes either in a position to close the window, or raised or lowered more Vor less,as may be desired, it is only necessary to turn the bolt in such manner as to screw the threaded end thereof into its plate c,- thereby draw-V i ing the two plates toward each other, and clamping the adjacent portions of the sashes between the said plates and the vertical slotf, situated between the two grooves a* 5*, in which the said portions o'f the sashes move, holds the sashes fixed withsuch force as to elfectnally resist any force likely-to-be applied directly thereto t move the same up or down, the entrance of intruders from the outside, even when the window is partially opened, vbeing by'thi's means securely guarded against.
What I claiml as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1, The two clamping-plates, and the tightening-bolt, combined and operated substantially as and for the p purpose specified. Y
2. The springs, arranged in relation to the plates c d, substantially as and for the purpose Specified.
GEO. B.. VANDERBILT.
