Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound at a high reaction rate and in high selectivity, by condensing a phenol with a ketone in the presence of a sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol is condensed with a ketone in the presence of a sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin partially modified with a pyridinealkanethiol having a ≥2C alkylene group at 30W120°C, preferably 60W100°C, usually in the atmosphere of an inert gas to give the titled compound. The amount of the phenol is preferably 5W25mol based on 1mol keton. The pyridinealkanethiol having the ≥2C alkylene group is expressed by the formula (R is ≥2C, preferably 2W4C, alkylene), and for example, 2-(4'-pyridyl)ethanethiol may be cited.
