Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a bisphenol by the reaction of a phenol with a ketone, in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin having a sulfonic acid group as a catalyst and a thiocarboxylic acid, e.g. thio-S-acetic acid, as a cocatalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol is reacted with a ketone at a molar ratio of 5:1W15:1, in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin (A) as a catalyst and a thiocarboxylic acid (B), e.g. thio-S-acetic acid, as a cocatalyst, at 60W110°C, to give a bisphenol. An arbitrary aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic thio-S- or dithio- carboxylic acid may be cited as the cocatalyst (B), and usually 1W7C aliphatic thiocarboxylic acid dissolved in the phenol is supplied to the reaction system in an amount of 0.03W3wt% based on the total amount of the raw materials.
