Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance in high yield, by reacting return gas with phenol keeping the isobutylene/phenols molar ratio in the liquid phase in the reactor whithin a specific range and feeding the return gas at a rate within a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of the titled substacne by the reaction of phenols with a mixture (return gas) obtained by removing butadiene from the 4C fraction obtained by the thermal cracking of naphtha, in the presence of an ortho-alkylation catalyst, the reaction is carried out keeping the isobutylene/ phenols molar ratio in the liquid phase in the reactor at about 0.1W2(pref. 0.2W 1.5) and feeding the return gas at a rate of 0.007W0.4mol/min (pref. 0.009W 0.03mol/min) of isobutylene per 1mol of the phenols in the liquid phase. The reaction temp. is pref. 130W145°C until the concentration of 2-t-butylphenol reaches the peak, and 105W115°C thereafter.
