Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high rate of reaction, by reacting HCHO, an alcohol and CO in the presence of a solid acid catalyst such as a strongly acidic cation exchange resin having sulfonic acid group on the styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer skeleton.
CONSTITUTION: A glycolic acid ether and ester are prepared by reacting formaldehyde, an alcohol and CO in the presence of a solid acid catalyst wherein the acidity of the acid point having an acidity of ≤2 as pKa is at least 0.1meq/g (e.g. a strongly acidic cation exchange resin having sulfonic acid functional group on tetrafluoroethylene skeleton). The amount of the solid acid catalyst is 0.1W 1,000meq per 1mol of formaldehyde.
