Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymeric material which, when contacted with water, rapidly absorbs it without a phenomenon of forming undissolved lumps, by coating a highly water-absorbing polymeric material with a water-soluble polymer or a water-soluble surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: A highly water-absorbing polymeric material is obtained by subjecting an acrylic acid (alkali metal salt) to a water-in-oil reversed phase suspension polymerization in the presence (or absence) of a crosslinking agent. Then, an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer (e.g., PVA, CMC, sodium alginate) and/or a water-soluble nonionic surfactant, HLB ≥10,[e.g., polyoxyethylene (12W16C) alkyl ether]is coated on the surface of the polymeric material and dried to coat the surface with 0.001W50wt% water-soluble polymer and/or surfactant.
