Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title polymer having high initial water absorption rate and high viscosity, and useful as an absorbent of sanitary napkin, etc., without using organic solvents, by copolymerizing a specific amount of an acrylic acid salt with a crosslinking monomer in an aqueous medium, in the presence of a surface active agent, at specific concentrations.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing ≥25wt% of a mixture comprising (A) 100pts.wt. of acrylic acid salt monomers composed of 0W50mol% of acrylic acid and 50W100mol% of an alkali acrylate and (B) 0.001W5pts.wt. of a crosslinking monomer (e.g. ethyleneglycol diacrylate), is polymerized in the presence of (C) (pref. 0.01W10pts.wt. of) a water-soluble and/or water-dispersible surface active agent (e.g. polyoxyethylene alkyl ether), pref. a nonionic surface active agent having an HLB value of ≥7. The water-containing polymer gel thus obtained may be dried by heating.
