Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Derivatives of α-(2-quinolinoxy)propionic acid of formula I (X is H or halogen; R is lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: Ethyl α-(2-quinolinoxy)propionate.
USE: Herbicides. Useful as a herbicide for paddy fields, farms and noncultivated lands, having a remarkably high herbicidal effect to perennial broad-leaved weeds as well as annual weeds.
PROCESS: A carbostyril derivative of formula II and a derivative of α-halogenopropionic acid of formula III (Y is halogen) are heated under reflux in an inert solvent in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent such as anhydrous potassium carbonate.
