Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivative expressed by formula I (X is halogen or CF3; n is an integer 1W4; R is 2W5C alkenyl or alkynyl).
EXAMPLE: 3-(5-Bromo-2-benzothiazolylmercapto)-1-propene.
USE: A herbicide having improved weeding activity against annual weeds in paddy fields, e.g. barnyard grass or monochoria, and weeding or weed inhibiting activity against perennial weeds, e.g. arrowhead or bulrush, with long duration of herbicidal effect and low toxicity and phytotoxicity, particularly almost no phytotoxicity to rice plants.
PROCESS: A 2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivative expressed by formula II is reacted with an alkenyl halide or alkynyl halide expressed by the formula R-Ch2-Y (Y is halogen) in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone, or a solvent, e.g. water, in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent, e.g. caustic soda, to give the compound expressed by formula I in high yield.
