Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0991594/C2/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl group of at least two carbon atoms and E is a hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy group and specifically those wherein (1) E is methoxy and R1 is ethyl, isopropyl or cetyl, and (2) E is hydroxy and R1 is ethyl; the compound in which E is methoxy and R1 is methyl is also claimed. These compounds are prepared by a process for preparing generally a compound of formula <FORM:0991594/C2/2> by selectively reducing the compound <FORM:0991594/C2/3> by hydrogenation in solution with a catalyst, the activity of the catalyst and nature of the solvent being such as to provide conditions for the preferential reduction of the 14,15-ethylenic bond and hydrogenation being maintained until sufficient hydrogen has been absorbed for saturation of one ethylenic bond; in the starting material, each R is H or alkyl, R1 is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and the benzene ring may be substituted, e.g. a hydroxy, acyloxy, alkoxy, amino, acylamino, monoalkylamino or dialkylamino group, especially in the 3-position. The process of the invention is also exemplified for the use in which E is acetoxy and R1 is methyl; the product is hydrolysed to the corresponding compound (E = OH).
