Abstract
The invention comprises 3-alkoxy-3-methyl-19-nor-4-oxa -9b -androst-5(10)-ene derivatives having the general formula <FORM:0976726/C1/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl residue and R1 is a lower alkyl group and processes for the preparation thereof wherein a D 8-3-methyl-7 - keto - 8 - (g -keto-butyl)-3, 4- [cyclopentano-(21, 11)]-octahydronaphthalene derivative is catalytically hydrogenated in solution in an acidic medium incorporating a lower alkanol to yield the corresponding desired 4-oxa steroid. As catalyst there may be employed palladium black. The 17b -acyloxy substituent in the product may be subsequently hydrolysed to obtain the corresponding 17b -hydroxy compound.
