Abstract
972,745. Bed-settees. A. DUCROT. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 9, 1961], No. 46138/62. Heading A4J. A sofa is converted to a bed by removing seat cushions and unfolding a spring mattress frame, which comprises frame elements 13, 7, 14, 15 hingedly interconnected so as to constitute in the sofa position a volume of rectangular crosssection housing a folded mattress, and in the bed position a plane supporting surface for the unfolded mattress. The frame elements are supported by links 5, 6 pivoted on the sofa frame 1 and connected to the frame elements by links 38, 10, 19, 20, 37 and 40. The unfolding of the mattress frame automatically unfolds legs 21 and causes the sofa back 24 to pivot on links 27, 40 to constitute a bed foot. The frame element 15 has blades 36 anchored by springs 39 to cross member 42 and to longitudinal blades 16 of the mattress support to protect the mattress and support the seat cushions. A facing panel 30 for the sofa front is mounted on support 5 and moves with it to allow the bed to unfold. A balance spring 29 is tensioned between frame 1 and link 6 to facilitate movement and cross members 46, 50, 51 limit the movement of the links in the folded position. A variation of the linkage is described, Fig. 10 (not shown), with an extra pair of legs and an extension on element 13 to support a lug on the sofa back when in the sofa position.
