Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0969292/C1/1> (wherein A is the group NR1R2, R1 and R1 being hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups of at most 6 carbon atoms, dialkylaminoethyl groups wherein each alkyl group contains at most 6 carbon atoms, or hydroxy-ethyl groups, or R1 and R2 together are an alkylene chain of 4 to 7 carbon atoms) and their preparation by reacting the appropriate acid halides with the amines HNR1R2. Examples are given, a hydrochloride of one product being described. Acid halides of the formula: <FORM:0969292/C1/2> (wherein X is a halogen atom) are prepared from the corresponding free acids or alkali metal salts thereof and oxalyl halides or inorganic acid halides. The octahydrophenanthrene derivatives of the invention, which are stated to be useful as hypocholesterolenic, antigonadotropin and estrogenic agents, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers. These may take the form of tablets, dragees, suppositories, capsules, solutions, emulsions or suspensions, and may contain preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents, salts for varying the osmotic pressure or buffers. Compositions containing 2b -(N,N-dimethylcarbamyl)-7-methoxy-1, 2, 3, 4, 4ab , 9, 10, 10ab -octa hydrophenanthrene are described. Specification 948,583 is referred to.
