Abstract

956,992. Piecing-up yarns. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Oct. 22,1962 [Nov. 23,1961], No. 41863/61. Heading D1W. Yarns or tows, of natural or synthetic e.g. nylon, drawn or undrawn continuous filaments or staple fibres of circular or non-circular crosssection, are joined by securing against axial movement and under minimum tension a portion of each of the yarns in stationary overlapping relationship (the length of overlapping portions being less than the length of any staple fibre in the yarn(s)) and agitating the filaments &c. with a turbulent flow of gas within a confined space which loosely restricts the yarns & c. and constrains the gas to have a resultant direction of flow parallel to the axes of the overlapping yarns. The filaments &c. become intermingled and cohere to produce a join which may have a tensile strength as high as that of the original yarns. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, overlapping ends 4 and 5 are clamped by spring clips 6 or plungers 7 within members 2 and 3 of a T- piece of piping through the arm 1 of which compressed air is applied. In the apparatus of Fig. 6, a slotted member 8 is rotatable (by means of a handle 9) within a slotted pipe between operative and threading-up positions. In apparatus shown in Fig. 9, yarns are secured by rubber clamps 7 within two confined spaces with conical outlets 2 and 3 and subjected to two air jets 1: the body of the apparatus is formed of two pieces 10 and 11 positioned by a spigot 12 comprising a central vertical slot (not shown) to accommodate yarns 4 and 5.
