[Also in Division G4] A device for determining the relative positions of two members 1 and 2 one of which is mechanically guided relative to the other in such a manner that it has one degree of freedom, comprises a transparent scale carrier 4 with scale divisions marked thereon secured to one of the members 1, which co-operates with a surface bearing a scale 10 secured to the other member 2 the determination of the said relative positions being made with the aid of a light beam projected through the scale carrier 4 and the scale 10 wherein the surface carrying the scale 10 is mounted as to be capable of movement across the scale carrier 4 and carries distance pieces 20 in contact with and slidable on the surface of the scale carrier 4 to maintain the scale 10 at a fixed distance from the scale carrier 4 to maintain the surface bearing the scale 10 at a fixed distance from the carrier 4. In the embodiment shown light from a source 8 shines through a collimating lens 9 on to the transparent scale carrier 4 having a series of grid like parallel graduations 16 (Fig. 5) ten microns wide, and from there on to the unit 17 having two sets of parallel graduations 18, 18<SP>1</SP> on a transparent scale 10 shifted in phase relative to one another by 90 degrees. The graduations 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are aligned in front of lenses 11 and 11<SP>1</SP> respectively which cause the light to impinge on a pair of photo-electric cells 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. Any movement of the member 2 in the direction of the degree of freedom with respect to the member 1 produces a series of pulse like signals at the outputs of the photo-electric cells 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, 90 degrees out of phase due to the action of the graduations 16 and 18, 181. The scale 10 is fixed in a rectangular frame of polyfluorethylene the longitudinal edges or distance pieces 20 of which project beyond the surface and slide on the surface 15. The frame is spring loaded (Fig. 2 not shown) in such a manner that it is resiliently movable in a direction perpendicular to the surface 15. The outputs of the photo-electric cells are fed to an evaluating instrument (not shown).
