Abstract

1,063,060. Photo-electric measuring apparatus. J. HEIDENHAIN, [trading as WENCZLER & HEIDENHAIN] Aug. 5, 1964 [Aug. 5, 1963], No.31879/64. Heading G1A. Photo-electric apparatus for position determination comprises a scale consisting of an optical diffraction grating having a grating constant a, a lined plate 2 movable in accordance with the member whose position is to be determined along a line spaced ka<SP>2</SP>/# from the grating where k is a whole number and # is the spectral centre of gravity of the sensitivity of the whole photoelectric apparatus viewing the combination. In Fig. 1 a lamp 3 provides light collimated by lens 4 and directed through the grating 1 whose rulings are metal coatings on a glass carrier to the movable plate 2 which carries similar rulings. Light passing the plate 2 is directed by lens 5 on to photo-diode 8. The grating constant of the elements 1 and 2 is 10 Ám. as shown so that if the centre of gravity of the spectral sensitivity of the system from source up to and including the detector is 1À1 Ám. the elements may be separated by 90 Ám. or a multiple thereof. Best results are obtained when k is small e.g. 1. To modify the shape of the electrical signal/position curve the ratio of the absorbing and transparent zones in the gratings may be modified. As shown with a 3 Ám. /7 Ám. ratio for the scale and 5 Ám. /5 Ám. for the plate a sine squared curve is produced. The ratio of maximum to minimum values in the electrical output is not significantly reduced by this modification.
