Abstract

Coke is made from weakly-coking coal by blending with the coal not less than 12 1/2 %, preferably 15-20%, of coal tar pitch and carbonizing the mixture in the coking chamber of a horizontal coke oven. The highest possible heating rate is maintained in the oven. Preferably the coal and pitch are crushed and mixed, and may then be treated as a loose charge or as a compressed cake. The pitch used may be obtained by distillation of tar from the process itself.
