Carbonizing processes. - A high temperature retort is steamed to generate a mixture of coal gas and water gas to which is added coal gas from a low temperature retort heated by waste heat from the high temperature retort setting. In an example horizontal retorts, charged full with 10-13 cwt. of coal and heated to 1050- 1100‹ C., are steamed for the last 90 minutes of the carbonizing period and the gases obtained are mixed with gas from a low temperature retort adapted to carbonize about ton for every ton of coal carbonized in the high temperature retorts. If the heat from the setting is insufficient a little producer gas may be introduced. The gases from both retorts are preferably couled before mixing in order to keep separate the dissimilar tars.
