891,343. Carbonising coal. NEHEZVEGYIPARI KUTATO INTEZET. May 7, 1959, No. 15736/59. Class 55 (1). In a process for the carbonisation of non- bituminous coal, the non-bituminous coal is predried, passed into a pre-coking chamber and thence into an indirectly heated coking chamber provided with refractory walls; the coke emerging from the latter is cooled by a quenching gas itself obtained by cooling and de-tarring volatile distillation products of the process, the arrangement being such that the quenching gas after cooling the coke is passed up a vertical channel centrally disposed in the coking chamber and provided with apertures, through which the volatile distillation products may enter the channel, intermingle with the quenching gas and assist in heating the incoming non- bituminous coal. As shown, apparatus suitable for use in effecting the above process comprises a pre-drying chamber (not shown), a precoking chamber 2, an indirectly heated coking chamber 3 heated by flues 5 separated from the coking chamber by refractory walls and a cokecooling chamber 10 provided with a vertical, centrally disposed channel 7 passing from the coke-cooling chamber 10 to the pre-coking chamber 2, the channel 7 being provided throughout its length with apertures serving in operation to permit volatile distillation products to enter the channel. Lignite is specified as a non-bituminous coal. If desired the quenching gas may be admitted at a pressure greater than atmospheric and the rate of extraction of quenching gas and volatile distillation products from the pre-coking chamber is so adjusted that the pressure in the coking chamber is substantially the same as in the flues. An example is given.
