An intermittent vertical chamber oven comprises an externally heated gas extraction chamber surmounting and connected with a lower chamber of about twice its height, the upper part of the lower chamber serving as a steaming chamber for the charge lowered into it, from the gas extraction chamber and the lower part as a coke cooling chamber, separate gas offtakes being provided at the top of the gas extraction chamber and of the steaming chamber. In the form shown the chamber oven is divided into a gas extraction chamber 1 bounded by heating walls 2, an unheated steaming chamber 4 and a water jacketed coke cooling chamber 5, the chambers being of about the same height and width. Gas outlets are provided at the top of the chamber 1 and at 9 at the top of chamber 4, steam being admitted to the bottom of the latter through ports 17. A coke extractor 19 is provided at the base of the cooling chamber 5. In operation, a coal charge in chamber 1 is partly coked and, if desired, undiluted distillation gas withdrawn from the top outlets. Then the charge, at about 900‹ C., is lowered into chamber 4 where coking is completed, steam or other gasifying agent being passed up through the chamber and the water gas &c., formed discharging wholly through outlets 9 or, if dilution of the distillation gas is required, being passed in part up through chamber 1. After steaming the charge is lowered into chamber 5, process steam being generated in a surrounding water jacket 18, and after being cooled, is discharged into a carriage 13.
