Discharging.-To facilitate. the working of an externally heated vertical retort for producing water-gas means are provided for loosening the coke at the base of the retort in order that steam may penetrate the whole mass. As shown, the coke-receiving chamber is divided into two compartments c. each having a discharge outlet a, a'; coke is withdrawn through these outlets alter. nately, thus effecting a loosening of the coke mass d above. The upper part of the chamber c is surrounded by a steam generator h from which steam passes to the receiver e and thence to the chamber c.
