Abstract
The free carbon content of coal tar pitch is increased by mixing with the pitch less than its own weight of pitch powder, pitch powder being the fraction of pitch insoluble in toluene or solvent naphtha. The modified pitch has a free carbon content of at least 30 per cent and most preferably 35 per cent or more and may be used for briquetting coal (see Group XII) or in making carbon electrodes. In making carbon electrodes a mixture of pitch, pitch powder and finely-ground coke is formed and the mixture baked. The mixture may be added to the top of an existing electrode and baked in situ. A pitch for use in making battery electrodes comprises a pitch of 70 DEG C softening point (K and S) mixed with 30 per cent by weight pitch powder, the mixture then being oiled back until it has a softening point of 40 DEG C.
