Abstract
The invention comprises (1) the preparation of 5-(b -cyanoethyl)hydantoin by reacting b -cyanopropionaldehyde azine or a hydrazone of the formula:- NC-CH2CH2-CH=N-NRR1, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-4 alkyl radical and R1 is phenyl or a C1-4 alkyl radical, with ammonium ions, carbonate ions and cyanide ions in an inert polar liquid solvent at a temperature of between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C.; and (2) the subsequent acid or alkali hydrolysis of the 5-(b -cyanoethyl)hydantoin. Suitable solvents are water and/or alcohols. The reaction is preferably conducted in the presence of a bisulphite and in the absence of oxygen.
