Abstract

Dyes are made by partially hydrolysing 1 : 4 - diamino - anthraquinone - 2 : 3 - dinitrile or a substitution product thereof with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 20-35 DEG C. and reacting the hydrolysis product so obtained with an aromatic mono- or di-amine, preferably in an inert diluent at 150 DEG -250 DEG C. In examples, (1) 1 : 4 - diaminoanthraquinone - 2 : 3 - dinitrile is treated with sulphuric acid monohydrate and the separated hydrolysis product is refluxed in presence or not of p - toluene sulphonic acid in naphthalene with one of: - 1 . 8 - naphthylene diamine, benzidine, b - anthramine, aniline, chloraniline, or b -naphthylamine, p-aminoacetanilide. Also in examples the hydrolysis product of the 6 : 71 - dichlor-, 6 - chlor-, or 5 - nitro derivatives of 1 : 4 - diaminoanthraquinone - 2 . 3 - dinitrile are similarly reacted with 1 . 8 naphthylene diamine.
