Abstract
A dye intermediate is prepared by treating a cyclohexane 1 : 3-dione with an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl mercaptan in the presence of a strong acid, the reaction being preferably effected in presence of a solvent for the reactants and the reaction mixture being kept as dry as possible. The acid may be dry HCl. A considerable excess of mercaptan may be used and function as a solvent. D 2 : 3 - (3 - Ethylthio - 5 : 5 - dimethyl) - cyclo - hexenone (1) is prepared by passing dry HCl into a cooled mixture of 5 : 5-dimethylcyclohexanedione (1 : 3) and allowing to stand. D 2 : 3-(3-Ethylthio-5-phenyl)-cyclohexenone (1), D 2 : 3-(3 - ethylthio - 5 - methyl) - cyclohexenone (1) and D 2 : 3 - (3 - ethylthio) - cyclohexenone (1) are similarly prepared. Dye intermediates may also be prepared from 5-isopropyl-, 4 : 5 : 5-trimethyl-, 4-phenyl-5 : 5-dimethyl- and 5-styryl-cyclohexanedione (1 : 3).
