Abstract

Hydantoins mono- or di-substituted at the 5-position are prepared by reacting an aldehyde or ketone and hydrocyanic acid, or the corresponding cyanohydrin, with carbon dioxide and an excess of ammonia in solution in water and/or organic solvents, using 1 mol of CO2 and 2,5-10 mols of water per mol of aldehyde, ketone or cyanohydrin. If a non-aqueous solvent is used the required water is added separately. Preferred reaction temperatures are 0-50 DEG C.; preferably the ratio NH3CO2 = 5-100:1. The process may be carried out continuously. Examples prepare: (1), (2) and (6) dimethylhydantoin; (3) methyl ethyl hydantoin; (4) and (7) 5 5-(21-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin; (5) phenylhydantoin.
