The dial 2 of a cylinder-and-dial machine having dial needles 4 operated by swinging jacks, is rotated in synchronism with the cylinder of the machine but is adapted to be shogged relatively to the cylinder to vary the needle spacing. The mechanism for driving the dial comprises a dial shaft 17 driven by a spur gear 33 through a span gear 32 freely mounted on the shaft 17. An arm 36 is pivotally mounted at 37 on gear 32 and is provided with a central bore 57 through which the shaft 17 freely passes and of such dimension to allow movement of the arm 36 without engaging the shaft. A collar 39 is secured to the shaft 17 and is coupled to the arm 36 by a stud 42. The drive from the gear 32 is therefore through arm 36 stud 42 and collar 39 to shaft 17. On the upper end of the shaft 17 a sleeve 72 having a conical lower surface 76 is slidably mounted and is adapted to be actuated according to the dictates of a cam drum to engage the conical surface 76 with a shoe 58 secured to the arm 36 so as to cause the arm to pivot, whereby the collar 39 and shaft 17 are partially rotated to vary the setting of the dial without interfering with the normal drive.
