Abstract
898,588. Valves. SULZER FRERES S.A. Dec. 12, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 42679/60. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). [Also in Group XXXII] A valve spring assembly comprises at least one valve spring 6 or 7 and a plurality of plate springs 9 disposed in series with the valve spring and enclosing a space acting as part of an hydraulic damper, means being provided for feeding lubricating oil to the space. In the valve closed position shown in the left half of the view, a port 13 in a sleeve 8 communicates with a passage 15 in valve guide 2. During valve spring compression, oil previously drawn into the space enclosed by the plate springs, is forced through port 14, and passage 16 to lubricate the valve stem. Air flowing through passages 18 and 19 prevents oil penetration to the valve seat. In another embodiment, the valve guide and stem materials do not require lubrication and the oil is returned directly to the valve chamber. In modifications, the sleeve 8 is omitted oil flow being controlled either by imperfect closure of the plate springs or by a flap valve.
