Abstract
768,502. Valves; lubricating. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. April 7, 1955 [April 12, 1954], No. 10321/55. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (6). [Also in Group XXVI] The stem 1 of an internal combustion engine valve, particularly an exhaust valve, is sealed and cooled by pressurized air supplied to an annular channel 17 surrounding the stem and flowing between the stem and its guide 5 in a direction away from the valve head 2 to a constricted outlet 13. A member 9 is provided with air and lubricant passages 10 and 11 respectively and a fitting 12 having the constricted outlet 13 which may be adjustable. Air passes from the passage 10 through a helical groove 14 in the guide 5 to an annular groove 15 connected by holes 16 with the annular channel 17 from where the air flows upwards through helical grooves 18 in the stem to a second helical groove 20 in the guide and then through a passage 21 in the member 9 to the outlet 13. Lubricant is supplied to the stem through the inlet passage 13 and a bore 22 and any passing down the stem as far as the grooves 18 is carried with the air to the outlet 13 and collected. A valve is fitted in the lubricant feed line to ensure that lubricant is supplied only when the air pressure exceeds a predetermined amount. The helical grooves 18 may be formed in the interior surface of the guide bush 5 instead of in the stem. In a modification in which the valve seating is a separate insertion fitted in the cylinder head, the air is supplied to and returned from the grooves in the stem through passages in the insertion which has a hollow chamber that surrounds and contains cooling medium for the valve guide.
