Abstract
768,146. Cooling fuel injectors. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. May 18, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 16255/54. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). A fuel injector housing 22 extends across the liquid cooling space of a cylinder head and an internal wall 30, surrounding but spaced by an annular clearance 32 from the housing 22, extends across the cooling space so as to divide it into two chambers communicating with one another through the annular space 32, the inlet and outlet passages for flow of cooling liquid through the cylinder head being so arranged that a flow of cooling liquid takes place from the chamber in which the outer end of the housing 22 is situated through the space 32 into the chamber adjacent the inner end of the housing 22 so that the liquid impinges upon the inner wall 12 of the cylinder head immediately around the end of housing 22 The inner end of the housing 22 is located in fluid-tight manner in a recess 23 in the inner wall 12 of the cylinder head and its outer end is screwed into the outer wall 15, the injector 24 being inclined to the cylinder axis at about 20‹. The cooling liquid enters the cylinder jacket at 33 and flows through a passage 35 into the chamber on the upper side of the internal wall 30. The restricted passage 32 produces a high velocity stream of cooling liquid flowing along the sides of the injector housing 22 towards the inner end of the housing and improves the cooling of the injector. A small aperture 37 permits steam and air to escape from the chamber above the wall 30. The Provisional Specification states that the cylinder head may be provided with an internal buttress wall as described in Specification 766,187.
