Abstract

894,173. Storage containers for liquefied gas. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Oct. 27, 1960 [Dec. 7, 1959], No. 36843/60. Class 8(2). A tank for the storage of liquefied gas comprises an outer shell 11 supported on columns 13 and spaced and insulated from an inner storage vessel 10 supported on assemblies 16, the latter comprising stub columns 20 attached to the inner vessel 10, e.g. by welding, and stub column supports 23 joined by means of sections 26 to the columns 13, respectively; the connection between each stub column 20 and its associated support 23 is such as to allow relative sliding movement between the column and its support when the inner vessel 10 contracts and expands. A pin 24 secured to the support 23 co-operates with a slot in the column 20 to guide the sliding movement. The inner vessel 10 and its supporting assemblies 16 may be made of aluminium, stainless steel or nickel-steel alloys; the supports 23 may however be made of mild carbon steel or of foam concrete or other cellular masonry, or of wood. Alternatively, heat insulating material may be inserted at the upper end of the supports 23 or the latter may be replaced by diaphragm plates mounted within the columns 13.
