Abstract

Class 120(3) [Also in Group VIII] An apparatus 8 for smoothing a travelling strand 2, e.g. a jute fibre strand, comprises a rotatable cage 62 containing a mass of rounded bodies, e.g. steel balls 60, movable within the cage 62 which has an opening extending continuously about the periphery of the cage in a plane, and means for rotating the cage about an axis perpendicular to the plane. The thread 2 passes through the apparatus 8 and then makes three passes through two wiper units 10, 12 separated by an electric heater unit 168, the units 10, 12 comprising cages similar to the cage 62. The cage 62 comprises a series of parallel spaced rings 104 between end plates 106, the peripheries of the rings engaging the spaces 102 between ribs 100 on each of three rollers, as 86, mounted on rotatable driven shafts 64, 66, 68. The cage 62 may dip in a trough 120 of liquid 121, e.g. an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, which is circulated by a pump 132 from a tank 124 via a filter 136, a plate 128, which may be adjustable, ensuring a constant liquid level in the trough 120. Alternatively, the liquid may be dripped or poured over the cage 62. The cage may be supported so that one or more of the rollers 86 dips in the liquid 121, and the strand 2 may itself be passed through the liquid. Adjacent each shaft 64, 66, 68 and parallel thereto is a fixed shaft 44, 46, 48, (Fig. 1), extending between fixed end plates, these shafts carrying spring-urged scrapers which engage the spaces 102 to clean the rollers 86, Fig. 6, (not shown). A modified cage, Fig. 11, comprises a series of rings 154 carried by webs 158 on hubs 156 pressed together on a rotatable central shaft 160. The units 8, 10, 168, 12 may be arranged in a horizontal or vertical straight line, and the heater unit may be omitted or located between the units 8, 10. The apparatus may be used for bleaching, dyeing or pigmenting a strand 2.
