Abstract

875,676. Air filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. April 30, 1959 [May 12, 1958; June 25, 1958], Nos. 15229/58 and 20361/58. Class 8(2). In an I.C. engine air intake filter comprising upper and lower casing shells 20, 21, Fig. 8, having shoulder forming recessed portions 37, 22 engaging within opposite ends of an inward flow pleated tubular filter element 11 when said shells are clamped together, the incoming air is directed downwardly over the outside of the element from the upper end thereof through passages 57, Fig. 9, of the casing and filtered air is discharged through an opening 27 in shell 21. The upper recessed portion 37 comprises a plate held by a spring 36 and having a gasket 39 which together with a gasket 24 on the bottom recessed portion 22 engage opposite ends of the filter element. Dust shaken from the element is discharged through apertures 42 in the lower shell 21 and filtered air traverses a silencing chamber 26. The filter element 11 comprises a strip of filter material e.g., resin impregnated paper joined at its ends and folded about transverse lines 3, Fig. 1, to form a series of accordian pleats having their ends sealed by adhesive applied to opposite longitudinal edge portions 2 of the strip on one side thereof; adjacent pleats and two parts of each pleat being spaced apart by dimples 4 - - 8, Fig. 3, impressed on the strip. The element may be lightly coated with a non- drying oil. Specification 875,677 is referred to.
