Abstract
848,129. Gas filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Feb. 27, 1959 [March 12, 1958], No. 7933/58. Class 8(2). A filter element comprises a sheet of filtering material 1, Fig. 5, such as resin impregnated paper, which is folded about transverse lines to form a series of pleats 4, the ends of which are sealed to form a series of pockets having open ends 5 lying in a common plane. A support plate 7, provided with one or more perforations 9, is sealed to the periphery of the plane containing the open ends 5. The plate 7 is preferably of cardboard or sheet steel and the sheet of filtering material is preferably provided along the edges of one face with adhesvie 2 which seals the pleats and plate 7. The filtering sheet is also preferably provided with dimples 17 to form spacing members between the two parts of each pleat and between adjacent pleats. The element is suitable for use in filtering air to the intake of an I.C. engine where the plate 7 of the element is clamped between the two parts 10, 11 of a housing, Fig. 3, provided with an air inlet 16 and an outlet 15. A flame arrester metal gauge 20 preferably covers the outlet and the housing 10 is preferably formed to act as or include a silencer chamber.
