Abstract

781,864. Oil filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1955 [June 10, 1955], No. 36459/55. Class 46. A flat filter cartridge for liquids, of the outside-in flow type, comprises a porous pleated paper or other sheet having its ends secured together as at 26 to form a flat tube 24 with the pleats extending longitudinally thereof, closure caps 33 at the end of the tube, and a flat, spreader tube 29 within the pleated tube and having inwardly extending ribs 31 which abut at 32 to resist external pressure on the tube by the walls of the pleated tube. As shown the tubes are diamond shaped and an unfolded pleat connects the two sides of the pleated tube adjacent the corner, but the cartridge may be flat with rounded ends. A cast housing 10 which may be integral with the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine houses the cartridge which stands on a raised ledge 23 on a thick base 13 containing inlet and outlet ports 14, 15 for the oil.
