Alternative fittings may be secured to a wagon carrying granular material to permit it to discharge its load either by gravity unassisted, or by fluidizing the material. The hopper vehicle illustrated in Fig. 1 discharges through conical shoots 4 each provided with a flange 5 by which it may be sealed either to a shoot 6, as illustrated, for unassisted discharge by gravity, or to a shoot 12 (Fig. 2) permitting fluidization of the material. The shoot 12 has an inner lining of porous material 14 through which passes air conveyed to the shoot through conduits 17, 18, 19 which fluidizes. the material to facilitate its flow along a pipe 16 which may be downwardly inclined. When the vehicle is to be unloaded in this way valves 3 (Fig. 1), which may also serve as loading hatches, are closed. Suitably inclined baffles 8, 9 may divide the body 1, which is preferably formed as a cylinder with irclined dished ends 2, into compartments. Sliding gates 7 on the gravity discharge shoot 6 may be operated by a rack and pinion, a screw and nut or a cable, or may be replaced by pivoted gates. The output pipe 16 may extend part-way across the interior of the shoot 12 and may be cut off obliquely or formed with a domed portion 29 (Fig. 4). As shown in Fig. 4 the porous surfaces 15 may be provided only in the floor of the shoot 12. The pipe 16 may be flattened in section.
