Abstract

The invention comprises benzoylcarbinol esters of the formula (I) <FORM:0818230/IV (b)/1> (where R1, R11 and R111 are alkyl groups, or R1 is an alkyl group and R11 and R111, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a saturated carbocyclic ring system), and their preparation by (I) reacting an a -halogenoketone of the formula (II) <FORM:0818230/IV (b)/2> (in which X is a halogen atom) with a metal salt of the formula <FORM:0818230/IV (b)/3> (wherein Me is a metal atom), (2) reacting the acid chloride or anhydride of an acid of the formula (III) <FORM:0818230/IV (b)/4> with benzoylcarbinol, (3) reacting benzoylcarbinol with an acid of the formula (III) in the presence of an acid catalyst, (4) heating benzoylcarbinol with an acid of the formula (III) under conditions such that the water formed is azeotropically removed, or (5) reacting phenyldiazoketone with an acid of the formula (III). Preferred compounds are those in which R1, R11 and R111 are alkyl groups containing 1-6 carbon atoms (particularly 1-4 carbon atoms), or in which R1 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and R11 and R111 form, with the carbon atom to which they are attached, a cyclohexyl group. Examples describe the preparation of benzoylcarbinol trimethylacetate by (1) reacting chloroacetophenone with the sodium salt of trimethylacetic acid in aqueous ethanol, (2) treating benzoylcarbinol in chloroform with trimethylacetyl chloride in the presence of pyridine (3) reacting phenyldiazoketone with trimethylacetic acid at 150 DEG C., (4) esterifying benzoylcarbinol with trimethylacetic acid in the presence of sulphuric acid, and (5) eliminating water between benzoylcarbinol and trimethylacetic acid by azeotropic distillation with benzene. The sodium salt of trimethylacetic acid in (1) may be replaced by a salt of 1-methylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid or tripropylacetic acid.
